What to Do When You Find a Plumbing Leak

Safety first, then stop the water if you can do it safely, then call with what you know.

Finding water where it should not be can be stressful. Start with safety, then take the steps you can manage without putting yourself at risk. You do not have to identify every damaged part before calling for help.

First, Check Whether the Area Is Safe

Stay Away From Water Near Electricity

Do not enter standing water near electrical equipment, outlets, or exposed wiring. Do not touch electrical switches while wet or standing in water. If there is immediate danger, leave the area and contact emergency services or the appropriate utility from a safe place.

Avoid Sagging Ceilings and Contaminated Water

Stay clear of bulging ceilings or areas that appear structurally unsafe. Avoid contact with sewage or unknown wastewater, and keep others away from the affected area.

Stop Additional Water Flow if You Can Do So Safely

Use an Accessible Fixture Shutoff for a Local Leak

An accessible supply valve may isolate a toilet or sink. Close it gently only if you know what it controls and can safely reach it. Do not force a stuck valve.

Consider the Home’s Main Shutoff for a Larger Supply Leak

If you know the customer-side main shutoff and it is safe to reach, closing it can limit further supply-water flow. Do not alter utility-owned equipment or enter a hazardous area trying to reach a valve.

Call With the Information You Have

Describe the Location and What Is Happening

Tell us whether water is actively flowing, which room is affected, whether the supply is off, and whether there are hazards. Photos may help only if you can take them safely. For an urgent leak, call rather than wait for a form response.

Understand Repair and Cleanup Responsibilities

Plumbing repair may stop the source without covering drying, flooring, drywall, or other restoration. Ask about the scope and contact appropriate specialists for damage assessment when necessary.

Common questions

Can I Wait Until Tomorrow?

An active leak or unsafe condition should not be ignored. Call to discuss the symptoms; urgency depends on what is happening, not just the time of day.

Should I Collect Photos for Insurance?

Only when safe. Ask your insurer about documentation and coverage requirements. Do not delay necessary safety steps to take pictures.
