What counts as a plumbing emergency

A plumbing emergency is anything doing damage, or putting someone at risk, while you wait. A pipe that burst at midnight, sewage rising in the tub on a holiday, a water heater dumping its tank on a Sunday. Every minute adds to the repair bill.

When you call, we first help you stop the damage: where the shut-off is, what not to touch, whether you need to step outside. Then a plumber heads your way in a truck stocked for the common emergencies, so most are fixed in a single visit.

You still get a price before work starts. We look at the problem, tell you what it will cost and why, and begin once you say yes.

What to do while you wait

  • Water flowing: close the main shut-off valve. It is usually near the water meter at the front of the property, or where the line enters the house.
  • Sewage backing up: stop using every sink, toilet, and tub, and keep people and pets out of the area.
  • Gas smell: leave, do not flip switches or start appliances, and call the gas company from outside.
  • Water heater leaking: close the cold-water valve on top of the unit.

Signs you need emergency plumbing

  • A burst pipe with water flowingWater can do thousands of dollars of damage in minutes. Close the main valve and call.
  • Sewage backing up into the houseThis is a health hazard, and the blockage is usually in the main sewer line. Do not try to clear it yourself.
  • No water at allIt may be a failed main line or a major leak on your side of the meter. We check before you assume it is the utility.
  • A gas smell near plumbing or appliancesOften described as rotten eggs. Leave first, call the gas company from outside, and do not go back in until it is cleared.
  • A ceiling or wall dripping or bulgingA sagging ceiling can come down. A stain alone is a slow leak; a bulge is urgent.
  • A water heater leaking from the tankA drip at a fitting is a repair. Water pooling from the tank body means the tank has failed.

Emergency Plumbing questions

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Anything causing damage or risk right now: flowing water you cannot stop, sewage in the house, a gas smell, or no water service. If you are not sure, call and describe it. We will tell you whether it can wait until morning.

Do you charge more for emergency or after-hours calls?

We look at the problem in person and give you the full price before any work begins. Ask about after-hours pricing when you call so there are no surprises.

What should I do while I wait for the plumber?

For water, close the main shut-off if you can reach it safely. For gas, leave and wait outside. For sewage, stop using all drains and keep the area clear. We give you specific steps on the phone.

Can you handle every kind of plumbing emergency?

Yes: burst pipes, sewage backups, water heater failures, slab leaks, gas line problems, and main-line blockages.

Will my homeowners insurance cover an emergency repair?

It depends on your policy and the cause. Sudden, accidental damage is often covered; gradual wear usually is not. We give you photos and a written invoice for the claim. Call your insurer once the emergency is under control.

What if it happens in the middle of the night?

Call. The emergency line is answered around the clock.

I had an excellent experience with SoCal 1 Plumbing! Eliass came out to clear a blockage in my kitchen line by snaking it through the outside wall clean-out, and everything was done efficiently and with great care. He also installed new tubular drains under my kitchen sink to stop the leaks I’d been dealing with. The work was high-quality, and they even provided a 1-year warranty on parts and labor, which gave me peace of mind. Highly recommend their professional and reliable service!
