Why the installation matters as much as the unit

A water heater that is the wrong size, vented incorrectly, or installed out of code fails early, can void its warranty, and can be unsafe. So we start with your house, not a catalog.

The plumber looks at the existing setup, how much hot water the household uses, the space and clearances, and whether the gas line and venting are sized for the unit you want. Then you get options, tank or tankless, with an itemized price for the unit and the labor.

We install the major brands, including Rheem, Bradford White, A.O. Smith, Navien, Noritz, and Rinnai. A water heater replacement in California generally needs a permit and inspection; we tell you at the estimate what applies in your city.

Tank or tankless

A tank heater stores 40 to 80 gallons of hot water, so it is ready at once but can run out. A tankless heater warms water as you use it. It costs more to install and may need a larger gas line or new venting, and it uses less energy and does not run out.

Signs you need water heater installation

  • The unit is more than 10 years oldA tank typically lasts 8 to 12 years. Replacing it on your schedule costs less than replacing it in an emergency.
  • Hot water runs out sooner than it used toUsually sediment on the heating surfaces, and often a sign the unit is near the end.
  • Rusty water from the hot taps onlyThe tank is corroding inside. That generally means replacement.
  • Rust, stains, or moisture on the unitA slow leak that leads to tank failure.
  • Popping, rumbling, or bangingSediment heating and cracking against the tank. It wastes energy and wears the tank.
  • Energy bills rising for no other reasonA struggling heater works harder for the same hot water.

Water Heater Installation questions

Do I need a new water heater or just a repair?

A unit under 8 years old with a failed element, thermostat, or pilot usually just needs a repair. A unit over 10 years old, or one with rust, a leaking tank, or discolored water, is usually due for replacement.

How long does installation take?

Replacing a tank with a tank takes about two to three hours. A tankless installation that needs a larger gas line or new venting can take four to six hours or more.

Do I need a permit for a water heater in California?

In most cities, yes. The permit means the installation is inspected for code compliance. We tell you at the estimate what applies.

What size water heater do I need?

As a guide for tanks: 30 to 40 gallons for one or two people, 40 to 50 for three or four, and 50 to 80 for larger households. Tankless units are sized by flow rate and temperature rise. We confirm the right size on site.

Can I switch from a tank to tankless?

Yes, and a replacement is the best time to do it. We check whether your gas line and venting can support it and give you the real total cost.

Which brands do you install?

Rheem, Bradford White, A.O. Smith, Navien, Noritz, and Rinnai, among others. We recommend by reliability, parts availability, and fit for your home.

I had an excellent experience with SoCal 1 Plumbing! Eliass came out to clear a blockage in my kitchen line by snaking it through the outside wall clean-out, and everything was done efficiently and with great care. He also installed new tubular drains under my kitchen sink to stop the leaks I’d been dealing with. The work was high-quality, and they even provided a 1-year warranty on parts and labor, which gave me peace of mind. Highly recommend their professional and reliable service!
