What repiping is
Repiping replaces the water supply lines in a house, or the section of them that is failing, with new pipe meant to last 50 years or more.
It solves three common problems: copper that keeps developing pinhole leaks, galvanized steel that has rusted inside until pressure drops, and polybutylene that has passed its service life.
The estimate starts with a look at the pipe you have, its condition, the layout of the house, and how many fixtures it serves. Then we go over copper, PEX, and CPVC with you. If only part of the system is failing, we say so; a partial repipe is often enough.
Most houses take one to three days, and the water is back on at the end of each working day.
Signs you need re-piping
- Pinhole leaks that keep appearingThree or more in two years, in different places, means the pipe wall is failing throughout.
- Low pressure all over the houseOne weak fixture is a local problem. Many weak fixtures point to the supply lines.
- Rusty water from hot and cold tapsDiscoloration on the hot side only is the water heater. On both sides it is usually galvanized pipe.
- Galvanized steel pipesCommon before 1970 and good for 40 to 70 years. Original galvanized in a house over 50 is worth assessing.
- Polybutylene pipesGray flexible plastic from homes built 1978 to 1995. It breaks down with chlorinated water and can fail suddenly.
- The meter moves with everything offAnd no single leak can be found.
- A house over 50 with original pipesWith no record of plumbing updates, an assessment is a sensible first step.

Re-piping questions
Do I need a repipe or just another repair?
It comes down to how often leaks happen and where. One leak is a spot repair. Leaks in several places within a few years point to a failing system. The estimate compares the long-term cost of both.
What is the difference between copper, PEX, and CPVC?
Copper is durable, lasts 50 years or more, and costs the most. PEX is flexible, easy to route, and does not corrode. CPVC is rigid plastic for hot and cold lines that costs less than copper.
How long does a whole-home repipe take?
Most single-family homes take one to three days, depending on size, fixture count, and access. Water is restored each evening.
How disruptive is it?
Less than most people expect. Walls and ceilings are opened at specific points, the openings are patched afterward, and the main inconvenience is a few hours without water each day.
Do I need a permit to repipe in California?
Usually, yes. Most cities require a permit and an inspection before the walls are closed.
Does repiping mean opening walls and ceilings?
At points along the pipe runs, yes. PEX can allow smaller openings because it bends. Tell us about tile or finishes you want protected so the routing can work around them.
What customers say
★★★★★
Great experience with Miguel and Steven! Fixed my stubborn kitchen sink clog. Very informative and respectful of my home in addressing the issue. Highly recommend!

I had an excellent experience with SoCal 1 Plumbing! Eliass came out to clear a blockage in my kitchen line by snaking it through the outside wall clean-out, and everything was done efficiently and with great care. He also installed new tubular drains under my kitchen sink to stop the leaks I’d been dealing with. The work was high-quality, and they even provided a 1-year warranty on parts and labor, which gave me peace of mind. Highly recommend their professional and reliable service!
